Physical therapy is treatment that uses movement, exercise and hands-on care to reduce pain and help you move and function better. A physical therapist works out why something hurts, not just where, and then gives you a plan to fix it: exercises, manual therapy, and changes to how you sit, lift, train or work.
At our clinic that starts with a detailed evaluation, which can include diagnostic ultrasound and a 3D movement scan. From there, every session is one-on-one.
Plan for about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits average about 45 minutes. We'll ask about your pain, your history and your goals, then test strength, mobility and how you move. You'll leave with a clear explanation of what's going on, a first set of exercises, and a plan for how many visits it's likely to take. Wear clothes you can move in.

Yes. Your whole session is with your clinician. You won't be handed off to an aide or share your time with other patients.
Physiotherapy is another name for physical therapy. It uses exercise, hands-on treatment and education to reduce pain and restore movement after injury, surgery or long-term problems.
Your first visit is a 60-minute evaluation: history, movement and strength testing, and a clear explanation of what's going on. Follow-up visits run about 45 minutes on average and mix hands-on treatment with exercises, and you'll get a home program to do between sessions.
It depends on the problem. Common examples are bridges and side planks for the back and hips, squats and step-ups for the knees, and band rotations for the shoulder. We pick and progress exercises to match what your body can handle.
Usually not. Under New York's direct-access rules, most patients can start physical therapy without a doctor's referral. Limits may apply depending on your insurance plan, so call 212-213-3480 and we'll help you check your coverage.
Look for a licensed physical therapist who treats your specific problem, works with you one-on-one for the whole session, and builds a plan around your goals. Check recent reviews, ask about insurance, and pick a clinic that's easy to reach from work or home.
Gentle walking, changing position often, and specific nerve and back exercises help many people. Avoid long stretches of sitting. If pain spreads down the leg with numbness or weakness, get it evaluated. Our sciatica page explains how we treat it.
